The Time Doctor 2 Chrome extension will allow you to track time directly from project management tools like Jira, Trello, Teamwork Projects, and Asana. This article will explain how to set up and use this feature.

How the Chrome Extension Works

The Chrome extension inserts a start/stop button into Jira, Trello, Teamwork Projects, Asana, and all the other apps that it integrates with.

The Chrome extension syncs with the desktop app, so any task and time tracked using the Chrome extension will appear in the desktop app as well as in reports for your account on the Time Doctor website.

You can install the Chrome extension from this page.

Once the Chrome Extension is installed, you can use it by navigating to any task in your Jira, Asana, Teamwork Projects, or Trello accounts. With a task open, you’ll see a Start Timer button on the page.

Click on this button to start tracking. Click Stop Timer to stop tracking time. 

You will see that the task and project have now been added to the list in your desktop app.

How to Activate the Chrome Extension for Your Company

To use the Chrome extension, your company must be using the interactive (not silent) version of the desktop app. The Projects & Tasks feature must be enabled in Settings -> Company Settings (see screenshot below).

If the Chrome extension isn’t already activated for your company, an admin can activate it on the Integrations page. (Log into your account, click on Settings -> Integrations in the upper menu.)


Once the Chrome extension has been enabled, your existing employees will see a notification in their desktop app that will prompt them to install the Chrome extension. When you invite new employees to join your company, they’ll be prompted to install the Chrome extension as part of the setup process.

How Tracked Time Is Sent Back to Jira

For Jira only, the Chrome extension will send tracked time back to Jira, so that its worklogs will match the Time Doctor worklogs.

The Chrome extension sends time to Jira via the user’s browser session.

Every 15 minutes, the Chrome extension will try to upload the current tracked time for Jira issues to Jira. If a Jira tab isn’t open at that time, the tracked time will be stored. It will then be uploaded as soon as the user opens Jira in a browser. (Any Jira page in the same Jira domain can be used by the Chrome extension to upload time. It doesn’t have to be the page containing the issue for which time was tracked.)

Limitation: Jira doesn’t accept worklogs smaller than 60 seconds, so any tracking sessions that are shorter than 60 seconds are discarded. This can cause a difference of a few minutes between the time tracked by Time Doctor 2 and the time uploaded in Jira.
